Knautical Privacy Policy
Effective Date: June 21, 2026
Last Updated: June 21, 2026
Knautical respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you use Knautical, including our website, vessel lookup tools, sailboat reference pages, wiki-style content, comments, reviews, discussions, reactions, and related services.
By using Knautical, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
Account and Authentication Information
Knautical uses Clerk to provide authentication and account management. When you create an account or sign in, Clerk may collect and process information such as your email address, phone number, username, name, profile image, authentication method, connected social login accounts, device/session information, and other information required to authenticate you.
Knautical may receive or store limited account-related information from Clerk, including your Clerk user ID and, depending on our configuration, your email address, name, username, profile image, or other basic account details.
Knautical does not intentionally store your password. Passwords and authentication credentials are handled by Clerk.
User Contributions and Activity
If you submit, edit, comment on, review, reply to, react to, discuss, upload, or otherwise contribute content to Knautical, we may collect and store that content and related information, including your Clerk user ID, timestamps, moderation status, reports, flags, and the vessel pages or records associated with the activity.
User contributions and related activity may be public depending on the feature used.
Vessel and Lookup Activity
When you use Knautical’s vessel lookup or reference features, we may collect information about your interactions with the site, such as pages viewed, searches performed, records accessed, filters used, and general usage activity.
Communications
If you contact us, we may collect your name, email address, message contents, and any other information you choose to provide.
Technical and Usage Information
We may automatically collect technical information, including IP address, browser type, device information, operating system, referring pages, pages viewed, access times, error logs, and similar diagnostic data.
We may also use cookies, local storage, session tokens, analytics tools, or similar technologies to operate, secure, and improve Knautical.
2. How We Use Information
We use information to provide, operate, and maintain Knautical; authenticate users and manage accounts; attribute contributions, comments, edits, reviews, replies, discussions, and reactions; display user-submitted content; moderate and review content; prevent spam, abuse, fraud, unauthorized access, and security incidents; improve site functionality; respond to support requests; enforce our Terms of Service; and comply with legal obligations.
3. Public Content
Knautical includes wiki-style and community features. Content you submit, including vessel information, corrections, comments, replies, reviews, discussions, reactions, photos, and other contributions, may be visible to other users or the public.
Do not submit personal information, confidential information, private ownership information, or sensitive information unless you are comfortable with it being publicly visible and associated with your account or contribution history.
If you delete your account, your public contributions, replies, reviews, discussions, reactions, and related activity may remain on Knautical, but your displayed identity may be replaced with “[deleted]” or a similar anonymous label.
4. How We Share Information
We may share information with authentication providers, including Clerk, to provide account login, session management, and user authentication.
We may also share information with service providers such as hosting providers, database providers, email providers, analytics providers, security tools, and support tools.
We may disclose information if required by law or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect rights, safety, users, Knautical, or others.
If Knautical is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or transfer of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
Public content, including contributions, comments, reviews, replies, discussions, reactions, and profile information, may be visible to other users or the public.
We do not sell your personal information in the ordinary sense of selling user data for money.
5. Clerk
Clerk provides authentication and user-management services for Knautical. Clerk may collect and process information according to its own privacy policy and contractual terms with Knautical.
Because Clerk’s data collection can depend on the authentication methods enabled, such as email login, phone login, passkeys, OAuth/social login, or multi-factor authentication, you should review Clerk’s privacy policy for more detail.
Deletion of your Knautical account may not automatically delete information separately processed by Clerk or other service providers. Authentication-related data may be handled according to Clerk’s policies and our configuration with Clerk.
6. Cookies and Similar Technologies
Knautical and its service providers may use cookies, local storage, pixels, tokens, or similar technologies to keep you signed in, secure your account, remember preferences, understand site usage, diagnose errors, and prevent abuse.
You can control cookies through your browser settings, but disabling cookies may affect account login or site functionality.
7. Account Deletion and Data Retention
You may delete your Knautical account through your account settings or by contacting us at privacy@knautical.com.
When an account is deleted, we will delete or de-identify account-level personal information that Knautical controls where required by law and where technically feasible.
However, Knautical may continue to store content and activity associated with the account, including contributions, edits, replies, comments, reviews, discussions, reactions, moderation records, reports, flags, and related timestamps.
After account deletion, public-facing attribution for retained content may be changed to “[deleted]” or a similar anonymous label. This means the content may remain visible, but it will no longer display the deleted user’s active account identity.
We retain this content to preserve discussion context, vessel record history, moderation integrity, abuse prevention, legal compliance, and the usefulness of Knautical’s community-edited information.
We may also retain certain information in backups, logs, security records, moderation records, or legal records for a limited period or as required by law.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or restriction of certain personal information.
You may be able to update certain account information through your account settings or Clerk-powered user profile tools.
To make a privacy request, contact us at privacy@knautical.com. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.
9. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect information. However, no website, database, or internet transmission is completely secure. You use Knautical at your own risk.
10. Children’s Privacy
Knautical is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to Knautical, contact us so we can take appropriate action.
11. Third-Party Links and Sources
Knautical may link to third-party websites, public records, databases, tools, or resources. We are not responsible for the privacy practices, content, or policies of third parties.
12. International Users
Knautical may be operated from the United States or use service providers located in the United States or other countries. If you access Knautical from outside your country, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries with different data protection laws.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted with a new “Last Updated” date. Your continued use of Knautical after changes become effective means you accept the updated Privacy Policy.
